Flexure test

There are various types of flexure test, which follow similar sequences and only differ in the type of specimen mounting and the number of load application points. The most common versions are the 2-point, 3-point and 4-point flexure tests. Various material characteristic values, together with the stress-strain curve, can be determined from the measured values obtained. In particular, the results of the flexure test show the material behavior near the surface of the specimen. The deflections measured are approximately four times greater than the extensions in a tensile test.

Flexure tests are carried out on virtually all materials and Zwick supplies special flexure test kits for all materials (plastics, composites, metals, cardboard, concrete etc.).

Different test devices are used according to the type of flexure test. Most commonly used is the 3-point flexure test, in which a force is applied centrally to a standardized beam-shaped specimen with a square cross-section, between two anvils. Force application is via a die and either a crosshead travel encoder or a contact extensometer located below the specimen is used to determine the stress-strain curve.
