Testing Soft Foams

The essential properties of soft foams are damping and insulation, while their primary function is to provide comfort. Technical foams are used for mattresses, seat cushions in furniture and vehicle seats and for various other applications, including thermal and acoustic insulation. Other uses for soft foams include filters, packaging, seals and sponges. 
The testing methods are specified in a series of ISO Standards and in ASTM D 3574. Seat cushions and backrests for vehicle seats are, as a rule, tested to company standards laid down by the OEMs in the automobile industry. For ageing tests there is also a series of special testing methods not covered by international Standards.  
Zwick is a world leader in this area of testing. Large foam sections can easily be tested using our C-Frame testing machines, while testXpert foam testing software covers all requirements for determining compression stress value, indentation hardness, compression characteristics and tear growth characteristics. 
A special electromechanical testing machine can be used for both static testing and fatigue testing to determine thickness loss and hardness loss.
Zwick also supplies devices for specimen preparation and for measuring bulk density, rebound resilience and Shore hardness.
